It’s Official: “Blazing Saddles” Is the Funniest Movie Ever Made

Happy 100th birthday, Mel Brooks – and what a gift to unwrap. The American Film Institute just rewrote its own history books, bumping “Blazing Saddles” (1974) from #6 all the way up to #1 on its famous “100 Years…100 Laughs” list, dethroning “Some Like It Hot” in the process.

Why now? Because Brooks has apparently been grumbling about this for years, insisting his film deserved the top spot. AFI finally caved – and they’re not even pretending otherwise.

“He’s right!” said AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale. “We’re happy to right this wrong as Mel celebrates his centennial. It’s good to be the king, and may he live to be a 2,000-year-old man. Happy birthday, Mel!”

(If you caught the callbacks to “History of the World” and “The 2000 Year Old Man,” congratulations — you’re a true Brooks fan.)

And Brooks isn’t just a one-hit wonder on this list. He’s the only filmmaker with three movies in the top 15: “Blazing Saddles” at #1, “The Producers” at #11, and “Young Frankenstein” at #13.

Westland Impact Festival Brings Film, Clean Energy, Indigenous Leadership, and Purpose-Driven Programming to Whitefis

The Westland Impact Festival returns to downtown Whitefish, Montana, from June 11–13, 2026, with a three-day gathering built around film, sustainability, culture, innovation, and community impact.

Described as “A Power Generator for the Greater Good,” the festival will feature 27 films, 15 panels, more than 40 speakers, live music, and programming across four venues. Founded by native Montanan Anderson Rosenthal, Westland brings together filmmakers, scientists, artists, Indigenous leaders, innovators, and advocates for conversations centered on meaningful change.

This year’s lineup includes films and creative voices connected to Sundance Labs, the Rockefeller Foundation, National Geographic, the Bush Foundation, and Emmy-winning producers and writers. Featured projects include work involving celebrated names such as Viola Davis, Jeff Bridges, and Wes Studi, alongside directors including Oscar nominee Sara Dosa, Susan Kucera, Steven Reich, Leya Hale, Ramzi Bashour, Matthew Thompson, Parker Croft, Daniel Glick, Melissa Bloom, and more.

A defining element of the 2026 festival is its commitment to sustainable live event production. Westland plans to power the full three-day event using solar energy and transportable batteries provided by New Use Energy, with on-site solar support from Northstone Solar. The initiative is designed to demonstrate what cleaner, more responsible event production can look like at scale.

Festival Producer Kimberly Rachelle also notes that Westland’s merchandise will be created through local partnerships using thrift-flipped garments, while the festival has partnered with TripZero to address travel-related carbon impact.

Opening night will place a special emphasis on Indigenous leadership, beginning with a traditional honor song and ceremony before the festival’s Indigenous Forum. The programming will include filmmakers and leaders representing the Blackfeet, Salish-Kootenai, Sicáŋğu Lak̇óta Oyáte/Rosebud, Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, Dine, Navajo, Pueblo, and Crow Nations, as well as Indigenous filmmakers from Canada, Mexico, and South America.

Bright Harvest: Powering Earth from Space
Followed by a live conversation with director Steven Reich, producer Brigitte Bren, and Caltech scientists connected to the film.

In the Company of Wolves: An American Journey
Narrated by Jeff Bridges and directed by Susan Kucera, the film explores the relationship between wolves, ecology, and the American landscape.

FOOD2050
Produced by The Rockefeller Foundation and narrated by Viola Davis, the film spotlights innovators working toward a future where food systems nourish people while helping restore the planet.

Time and Water
Produced by National Geographic and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sara Dosa, the film follows Icelandic writer Andri Snær Magnason as he reflects on memory, family, glaciers, and environmental loss.

No Greater Act: Pueblo Resistance
Narrated by Oscar-winning Indigenous actor Wes Studi, the documentary centers Indigenous history, resilience, and resistance.

Beyond film, Westland’s panels will explore topics including finance, biomimicry, sustainable data centers, attainable housing, regenerative agriculture, artificial intelligence, philanthropy, traditional ecological knowledge, sports, and entertainment. The festival’s Ignite Speaker, Ayisha Siddiqa, is a climate and human rights advocate who was featured as one of TIME’s Women of the Year and currently serves as an advisor-in-residence at The Hague while completing law school at UCLA.

A new documentary on Culture Club brings together band members Boy George, Roy Hay, Mikey Craig, and Jon Moss for the first time to tell the full story of one of the most influential bands of the 1980s.

Rabbi Turns Warrior in Thrilling Teaser, Premiering at Cannes with North American Release Summer 2025

Pictures From The Fringe and Concourse Media announce the action-thriller ‘GUNS & MOSES,’ set for a nationwide theatrical release on July 18, 2025, with its world premiere at Cannes. The film, inspired by the 2019 Chabad of Poway synagogue shooting, stars Mark Feuerstein as Rabbi Mo, a high-desert rabbi turned unlikely gunfighter protecting his community after a violent attack. The cast includes Neal McDonough, Alona Tal, Craig Sheffer, Jackson Dunn, Christopher Lloyd, and Dermot Mulroney. SC Films International has taken on the role of international sales partner for the family film ‘Grow’

Starring Golda Rosheuvel and Nick Frost

The family film Grow, starring Golda Rosheuvel (Bridgerton) and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), is currently being showcased at the 2024 American Film Market (AFM) in Las Vegas. It is set for a 2025 release and is produced by Double Nickel Entertainment, in association with Sky and Orogen Entertainment. SC Films International handles global sales rights.

Directed by John McPhail (Anna and the Apocalypse), Grow centers on Dinah Little, a grumpy farmer played by Rosheuvel, who reluctantly takes in her niece Charlie (Priya-Rose Brookwell) from an orphanage. The story unfolds in the “Pumpkin Capital of the World,” where the highlight of the year is a high-stakes pumpkin-growing contest with a huge cash prize. With a special affinity for plants, Charlie enters the contest but faces sabotage and a genetically engineered rival. As Charlie nurtures her pumpkin, a bond grows between her and Dinah.

In addition to Rosheuvel and Brookwell, the cast includes Nick Frost, Tim McInnerny, Jane Horrocks, and comedian Alan Carr. The film’s production team includes Adam Richman, Jenette Kahn, and Joe Capotorto of Double Nickel Entertainment. Nick Guthe, Christos N. Gage, and Ruth Fletcher Gage wrote the screenplay.

Supporting cast includes Joe Wilkinson (After Life), Kathryn Drysdale (Bridgerton), Fisayo Akinade (Heartstopper), and Sharon Rooney (Barbie).

Grow is produced with Sky and commissioned by Andrew Orr, Head of Original Film at Sky UK. The film will be released globally in theaters and on Sky Cinema in the UK and Ireland in 2025. SC Films CEO Simon Crowe expressed excitement about the project, calling it a “funny and uplifting film for all the family.”

Executive producers from Sky, Orogen Entertainment, SC Films International, and Screen Scotland, among others, are supporting the film.

Kevin Smith has hired Bear McCreary to compose the soundtrack for his new film, The 4:30 Movie

Kevin Smith’s new film, The 4:30 Movie, debuts this week with an original soundtrack by award-winning composer Bear McCreary. Set in the 1980s, the film follows three 16-year-old friends who sneak into movies and learn life lessons when one invites his crush along. The soundtrack, available on all digital platforms via Sparks & Shadows Records, features McCreary’s synth-heavy, nostalgic score. This collaboration marks McCreary’s third with Smith, following their work on Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Masters of the Universe: Revolution. McCreary’s score includes original songs like “Astroblaster and the Beaver Men” and the end-credits track “24 Karat Case of Love,” which McCreary describes as a tribute to the 1980s.

“Bear McCreary made magic with The 4:30 Movie, composing a sonic salute to the ’80s era that’s as much a time tunnel to 1986 as it is a joyful movie score,” says Smith. “The closing banger he and his brother, Brendan, wrote and recorded for the end credits, “24 Karat Case of Love,” is the greatest ’80s radio hit that never happened!”

Adds McCreary, “I was thrilled to join Kevin Smith to score The 4:30 Movie, his nostalgic odyssey back to the 1980s. Inspired by his sweet-natured story, I had a blast writing a synth-soaked score oozing with arpeggios, drum machines, and hair-metal riffs, backed with classic symphonic orchestration. A highlight was collaborating with my brother, Brendan McCreary, on the film’s two original songs, “Astroblaster and the Beaver Men,” which evokes that ’80s futuristic-rock aesthetic, and the film’s end title song, “24 Karat Case of Love,” which feels like a lost synth-pop gem from the neon-tinged, balmy summer of 1986.”

Apple TV+ has announced the global premiere of its documentary series “K-Pop Idols,” set to debut on August 30, 2024. The six-part series provides an inside look at the world of K-pop, featuring artists Jessi, CRAVITY, and BLACKSWAN. Viewers will follow Jessi’s solo tour, CRAVITY’s efforts to impress their agency, and BLACKSWAN’s internal conflicts. The documentary explores these artists’ personal and professional challenges, including their performances, family connections, and career decisions. Produced by Boat Rocker’s Matador Content and featuring a team of Emmy Award-winning producers, the series promises an intimate view of the highs and lows of K-pop stardom.

Announced on March 7, Baz Luhrmann’s label House of Iona/RCA Records release the ELVIS (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Deluxe Edition – click here to listen. This deluxe release follows the immense success of both the film, which was the number one non-IP-based box office earner of 2022, and the soundtrack for “ELVIS.” The soundtrack was nominated for two 2023 Grammy Award nominations – Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media Album and Best Rap Performance (for Doja Cat’s single “Vegas”).
