Legendary songwriter and two-time GRAMMY winner Rodney Crowell has released his highly anticipated new album Airline Highway today via New West Records. The 10-track collection, produced by Tyler Bryant and recorded in New Orleans with Grammy-winning engineer Trina Shoemaker, captures Crowell’s trademark wisdom and energy while introducing fresh voices from today’s blues and country scene.
The record features notable collaborations: Ashley McBryde on the co-written “Taking Flight,” Lukas Nelson on opener “Rainy Days in California,” Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke on “Heaven Can You Help,” and Rebecca & Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe, who lend harmonies and slide guitar across the set. Critics are already praising the album—NPR hails Crowell as “one of the great songwriting masters of Country and Americana,” while PopMatters calls him “the King of Country Music, at least the Americana side of the genre.”
Born from fast, live-in-the-room sessions in Louisiana, Airline Highway is steeped in swamp-pop soul and southern atmosphere. Its themes reflect on memory, aging, and moving forward, with Crowell himself noting:
“I’m up in the seventh decade of my life…my ambition isn’t to be a household name anymore, it’s to be satisfied with the work I do. I’m at a place where it really is about having fun.”
To support the album, Crowell will hit the road this fall with the Airline Highway Tour, beginning October 1 at Largo in Los Angeles and including stops at New York’s City Winery, The Heights Theater in Houston, and Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. Special guests on select dates include The Secret Sisters, Thomas Csorba, and William Elliott Whitmore. Before the tour kicks off, Crowell will appear at the Grand Ole Opry (Sept. 3) and Americanafest in Nashville (Sept. 13).
With a career spanning 50 years, 15 #1 country hits, and songs recorded by icons like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and George Strait, Crowell remains one of America’s most enduring storytellers. Airline Highway is a testament to that legacy—an album that looks back with honesty while leaning forward with joy.
Airline Highway is available now on digital platforms, CD, and vinyl, including several limited-edition pressings through New West Records and select retailers.
