Announced in Nashville, Tennessee, three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams has announced a fall tour in support of her critically acclaimed new album Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart, out on Highway 20 Records and Thirty Tigers. The “Don’t Tell Anybody The Secrets” tour will be a multi-media experience with Williams sharing stories and anecdotes while performing songs from throughout her celebrated career. The tour will kick off on October 7th at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and will include stops in St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, Toronto, Boston, and New York City. Following its June 30th release, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart received high praise from the press in what many have referred to as a “comeback” album following Williams’ 2020 stroke. Young Guv’s ‘GUV I’ out now; NYC release show announced

Young Guv’s latest endeavor GUV I, delivers a collection of staggeringly poignant and infectious pop tunes which he describes akin to “people-watching in a foreign country in the morning, trying not to cry from the overwhelming feeling of sadness and happiness.” Another way of putting it; Young Guv songs are about being alone. Young Guv is dedicated and prolific songwriter, Ben Cook. You may know him from his work and partake legendary bands such as F’cked Up and No Warning. But the only place to hear music that belongs entirely to Ben Cook – music that comes into the world owing nothing to a band-mate or a client or a genre convention, whether affectionately observed or cheekily subverted – has been under the umbrella of Young Guv. Since 2008, he has released a steady drip of singles and EP’s, plus two full-lengths. Sometimes Young Guv songs have guitars and British Invasion harmonies; sometimes they have synths and a modulated voice. Ron Pope confirms U.S. tour dates, to release new LP, ‘Bone Structure,’ next spring

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Ron Pope announces a string of U.S. tour dates, kicking off January 10, 2020 in Nashville; purchase tickets here. You can find a complete list of dates below. Pope’s new LP, Bone Structure, will be released next spring via his own Brooklyn Basement Records. He has released two singles from the forthcoming record thus far, “Take The Edge Off” and “Practice What I Preach,” which premiered via The Boot. Rolling Stone Country recently featured the single “Practice What I Preach” as part of their “10 Best Country and Americana Songs to Hear Now.”

“Writing these songs reminded me of where I’ve been and how hard it was to claw my way out of that pit of my own creation,” Pope says of the new record, “I don’t miss who I used to be…Having to stare at those ancient reflections of myself through this process has not always been so easy, but I’ve tried to be as honest as I can stand to be.”
Bone Structure follows the release of 2018’s Worktapes EP and is Pope’s first studio album since 2017’s Work. He cites Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, the Carter Family, Patsy Cline, George Jones, as a few of his inspirations for the new album, as well as his one-year-old daughter. After becoming a father last year, he abandoned an album’s worth of recording sessions and found a renewed purpose for Bone Structure: To explain his perspective on the world to his daughter in the event he was no longer there. This drastic change of direction inspired some songs on the album to speak directly to his child, and others to illuminate life lessons Pope has collected.

“When I became a father, I spent a lot of time fixating on the things I don’t know and what I wasn’t taught,” Pope explains, “What can I do better than the people who raised me and what should I borrow from them?” He goes on the say, “The narratives on this album are only part of what I wanted to share with my child. This record is also meant to take her on a sonic journey through my influences…I guess she’s influencing me now, too.”

Pope has surpassed 1.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, sold out shows in more than 20 countries, sold over two million digital tracks, had over 350 million streams on Spotify, 825 million plays on Pandora and 150 million views on YouTube. His music has been featured on NBC’s “The Voice,” CW’s “Vampire Diaries,” “90210,” and multiple seasons of FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” which sent two of his albums into the top 100 on iTunes simultaneously. Independently, Pope has written and produced six full-length albums; Work, Ron Pope & The Nighthawks, Atlanta, Calling Off The Dogs and Daylight. Brother & sister duo, Wardell, announce release of second album, Impossible Falcon, out September 20

Wardell, the brother-sister duo of Theo and Sasha Spielberg, have announced the release of their second full-length album, Impossible Falcon, out September 20. Additionally, they have released the first single from the album, “I’m A Man,” via Rolling Stone. Listen and share “I’m A Man” via the below:

“This was one of the first songs we wrote for the album but also one of the last songs to be recorded,” Theo Spielberg tells Rolling Stone. “So while the song’s sentiment informed the rest of the album, it took recording most of the rest of the album in order to zero in on the sonics and the vibe of this song. It’s very self-reflexive in that way. This album was written while we were both questioning our individual relationships, realizing we were outgrowing old patterns and partners. Little did we realize that our band was actually going through similar motions.”

The children of filmmaker Steven Spielberg and actress Kate Capshaw, Wardell first began as a duo titled Brother/Sister, writing and recording music since they were young and first playing shows in 2010. They released their debut album, Love/Idleness, in 2015, two years after their first EP Brother/Sister. Love/Idleness, recorded primarily in the duo’s childhood home, was created just prior to Theo moving to New York to book music for “Saturday Night Live” while Sasha continued to work in Los Angeles, collaborating with other musicians such as Nicolas Jaar.

In the fall of 2016 they entered the studio with Chris Coady and a handful of songs and spent over a month recording what would be the foundations of Impossible Falcon. However, they still felt something was missing, and they had more songs they wanted to record. In 2017 Sasha began her solo project, Buzzy Lee, while Theo began work as the director of programming for the then-new Public Arts in New York City. Things finally snapped into place in April of 2018 when Theo ran into childhood friend Adam Gunther at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles. “I basically asked Adam if he wanted to produce this new album, that we wanted to keep it tight and close to home, that we wanted the comfort of friends.”

Over the course of the next few months, several dinners and emails later, they set-up the sessions that were to complete the album. They started with a song that they’d written right before going into the studio with Chris, “Domestic Sweater.” “It ended up being perfect because by the time we went into the studio with Adam we had looked at these songs from so many different angles, demoed and re-demoed them, we were pretty intimately familiar with them.”

“We tracked ‘Domestic Sweater’ live as a full band. It had been a while since we had even performed so in doing so, a sweet innocence arose, as though we were playing in our garage again” says Sasha.

Sasha continues, “During our sessions with Chris, I was going through the death of my “step-dog,” Poncho. We lit a candle for Poncho and continued the record. In our sessions with Adam, I was going through a breakup with “Poncho’s dad.” Both Chris and Adam shared our sense of humor, so while there was a heaviness to tracking around that time, we were constantly laughing.”

It was in this spirit that Wardell finished the album. Both Theo and Sasha were going through breakups, the band was being pushed towards different coasts, yet they both found the beauty in building something new with the understanding that things fall apart.

Grammy Award-winning artists Marc Cohn and Blind Boys of Alabama to release collaboration, Work To Do, out on August 9

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Marc Cohn and gospel titans Blind Boys of Alabama have announced the August 9th release of Work to Do, via BMG. Produced by John Leventhal, the unique collection combines the songwriting talents of Marc Cohn with the soul-stirring harmonies of Blind Boys of Alabama and falls on the heels of more than a year of live collaborative dates.

Work to Do is comprised of three studio tracks by Cohn and the Blind Boys (two originals, including the title track, and a version of the gospel standard “Walk In Jerusalem”) plus seven intimate live performances recorded at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook, CT, during a taping of the PBS series The Kate. Original plans were to release an EP containing the studio tracks, but the excitement and magic captured during the taping inspired the decision to create this unique hybrid album.

“To me, the perfect rock and roll record is perfectly fucked up,” Keifer says with a hearty laugh. “You try to make each record interesting and different. I don’t ever want to make the same record twice, even though there’s a common thread between them. Everything doesn’t have to be perfectly in place, but there is a balance you try to strike. Sometimes there may be something about it that’s technically not ‘right,’ but there’s a vibe, an energy and an attitude to it that I always try to preserve.”

Husband and wife duo, Smooth Hound Smith, to release ‘Dog In A Manger’ on August 9

Husband and wife duo, Zack Smith and Cailyn Doyle-Smith, make up Smooth Hound Smith, which began in Southern California, and then to endless club gigs in East Nashville and opening for huge acts like The Dixie Chicks. Now the duo are releasing their new and third album, Dog In A Manger, on August 9 via Tone Tree.

The songs on Dog in a Manger‘s tracklist salute the far corners of the Americana world, touching upon everything from greasy, big-city blues to acoustic folk. There are slide guitar solos, coed harmonies, a Fleetwood Mac cover and a cameo by the North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson tossed into the mix, too.

“I wasn’t conscious of it as I was writing this songs,” Zack explains. “But I realized when I finished that I can relate the lyrics back to was what my dad went through before he passed. He had been diagnosed with CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease), which attacks the brain. Literally one in a million people suffer from it. There is no cure. The fatality rate is 100 percent, usually within a year.”

In fact, he died just three weeks after being diagnosed, though Zack and Caitlin were able to make it back to L.A. to say goodbye literally minutes before he passed. “That really lit a fire under my ass to get things done in a way I couldn’t have predicted, Zack says. “Caitlin and I knew it was sink or swim. We had to put out new content and it had to be good.”

Dog In A Manger was recorded in the couple’s living room and tracked on Pro Tools. As much as they’ve achieved with Dog In A Manger, Smooth Hound Smith know that this is just one stop down their path toward promising horizons. “Caitlin and I feel like this is exploratory,” Zack explains. “It’s like, say, leather working: If you put in five or ten years of working leather, you’re going to be pretty good at it. If anybody throws a job at you, you’ll be able to do it.

“I feel that way about music. Everyone of our songs is a little different from the others. The next song I write could be the best one I’ve ever written. It could be the worst song I’ve ever written. But I do know that five years from now Caitlin and i are gonna be making music much better than anything we’d made before.”

Jack West to release ‘For the Record’ on August 2

Fourteen year-old rock ‘n’ roller, Jack West, will release his debut album, For the Record, on August 2. The album is a collaboration between West and renowned Seattle producer Barrett Jones (Nirvana & Foo Fighters), and recorded at Jones’ famed Laundry Room Studio. The album features eighteen tracks, featuring piano, guitar bass and drum tracks on Logic, of which he and Jones both chose to make for the upcoming album.

West has previously performed with Eddie Vedder before 30,000 at a concert in Nashville, and just performed at BottleRock festival. Now, he and his five-piece band – which includes a number of local, veteran Rochester musicians – are preparing for select East Coast dates. Stay tuned!
