My Morning Jacket are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their acclaimed 2005 album Z with the release of a previously unheard track, “The Devil’s Peanut Butter,” available now on all streaming platforms. The echo-laden, psychedelic romp introduces the Z 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, set for release on October 3, via ATO Records.
The newly remastered collection, mixed from the original master tapes by GRAMMY Award-winner Emily Lazar (Beck, Jacob Collier), will be available digitally, on CD, and as a 3LP set pressed on pink, coral, and blue vinyl. Highlights include 14 outtakes, unreleased material, demos, and film soundtrack recordings.
Jim James on “The Devil’s Peanut Butter”
“I remember the melody popping into my head as I strolled across the harbor bridge in Sydney near the Opera House,” recalls frontman Jim James. “For some reason, it didn’t seem to fit on Z back then, but we all loved it, then forgot about it for 20 years. Now here it is, back to life—we hope you enjoy!”

A Landmark Album, Revisited
Released October 4, 2005, Z quickly became a career-defining record for the Louisville, KY-based band. Named by Rolling Stone among The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, the album fused rock, dub, electronica, and reggae influences with expansive songwriting. Co-produced with legendary British producer John Leckie (Radiohead, The Stone Roses), Z introduced now-classic tracks like “Wordless Chorus,” “Gideon,” and “Dondante.”
Rock journalist David Fricke captures the spirit of the record in the new liner notes:
“Recorded outside My Morning Jacket’s Louisville comfort zone, Z was the debut of a brand new band in ten songs of intensely personal sharing—illuminated with jubilant studio risk, rhythms expressly made for dancing, and hooks that would not quit.”
My Morning Jacket Today
The anniversary comes alongside the release of is, the band’s 10th studio album and first new full-length in three years, produced by Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam). Tracks like “Time Waited,” “Half A Lifetime,” and “Squid Ink” showcase a band still pushing boundaries two decades after their breakthrough.
The band’s 2025 tour continues this fall, with stops in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Nashville, and Atlanta. My Morning Jacket also continues their partnership with nonprofit REVERB to expand tour sustainability efforts and support climate solutions through the Music Decarbonization Project.
