Stephen Sanchez shares new song, ‘Baby Blue Bathing Suit’

Track inspired by the music of The Beach Boys

Breakout singer/songwriter Stephen Sanchez has dropped a new song, “Baby Blue Bathing Suit.” The single was written by Stephen Sanchez, Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan) and Amy Allen (Shawn Mendes, Halsey, Sabrina Carpenter) and was inspired by the music of The Beach Boys. As with the legendary band’s music, “Baby Blue Bathing Suit” is rife with irresistible hooks that transport listeners to a world of surf, sand, and an endless summer. Stephen Sanchez says: “I was floored when The Beach Boys’ team reached out to me about being featured on the film’s soundtrack – it’s truly an honor to be a part of this project and I have so much respect for the band and their musical legacy. Endless Summer was one of the first vinyls my Grandpa gave me as a kid. Recording the song was equally incredible – I got to work with Dan Nigro and Amy Allen to write the track, and I recorded the vocals when I was in London at the iconic Abbey Road Studios. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!”

Dan Nigro Says: “I would not be the songwriter I am today if it weren’t for The Beach Boys. Being asked to write this song for the documentary is honestly a dream come true.”

Amy Allen says: “The Beach Boys inspired me from the first time my dad put on the Pet Sounds CD in the car when I was 8 years old, and still inspire me today as I continue to learn from their chord progressions, intricate harmonies, and their timeless songwriting in general. Sam Gyllenhaal Band debuts new acoustic single, new album debuts later this year

Nashville-based trio Sam Gyllenhaal Band is highlighting two past single releases via new versions featuring an acoustic treatment that strips the songs down to their essence. The acoustic versions highlight the band’s three-part harmonies and allow the trio to experiment with different instrumentation and percussion. Since the band tours mostly as an acoustic trio, these new versions are very representative of the current live show.

The first acoustic single, “Mary Does (Acoustic)” was just released on January 26, 2024, via Rock Ridge Music. The original version was released in 2022.

“‘Mary Does’ is that new relationship whirlwind where you get no sleep and spend your waking hours daydreaming about this person who’s flipped your world upside down,” explains band lead singer, guitarist, and namesake, Sam Gyllenhaal. “The honeymoon phase blooms, and a long-term relationship takes root. They make you a better person just by being around you, but they also accept you for being exactly who you are.”

The second acoustic single, “Blame It on the Moonlight (Acoustic),” will be released on March 29, 2023.

“‘Blame it on the Moonlight’ is probably the most flirtatious song I’ve ever written,” says Gyllenhaal. “It’s romantic sarcasm at its finest, and the listener, the girl I’m wooing, and I are all in on the joke. It’s a head-spinning infatuation, and it has nothing to do with the moonlight and everything to do with that crazy, head-over-heels kind of love.”

Both “Mary Does” and “Blame It on the Moonlight” were co-writes with Nicole Lewis and the late John Cirillo, who passed away in 2022.

“These songs are a tribute to John and his legacy and his feel-good, positive voice,” says Gyllenhaal.

The band also plans to release a new album later in 2024, with the first single from it, “Try Me,” to be released May 31, 2024.

As a band, they have found the sweet spot: that place where rich, three-part harmony and thoughtful, catchy songwriting come together – but it wasn’t easy to find. Gyllenhaal himself has been writing, woodshedding, recording, and gigging over a span of 10 years which has included living in three cities, five or six-day jobs, and hundreds of song demos. Music has always been a big part of Gyllenhaal’s life – he started playing guitar at the age of 4 and was involved in musical theater while growing up – but he didn’t discover that he wanted to pursue music professionally until writing his first song in college. Since that very first song, he has had a one-track mind: to make music he loves with the people he loves.

Joined by his frequent co-writer Alaina Stacey and long-time friend and bandmate Alex Schreiner, the Sam Gyllenhaal Band officially came together in 2017. Stacey brings a beautifully pure tone and an out-of-this-world knack for blending, while Schreiner, who has known Gyllenhaal since their college a cappella days, has a voice that complements and magnifies Gyllenhaal’s smooth tenor – he’s also been known to play the shaker like it owes him money.

The band came out with its first full-length album entitled A Little More Freedom in December of 2018, co-produced with industry veteran Denny Martin. The first track, “Anything, Everything” was featured on the Silverado Records Country Music Discovery Series, receiving 30k streams on Spotify alone. In November of 2020, the band came out with an EP called Don’t Look Down. The title track won an honorable mention in American Songwriter’s 2021 Song Contest. Their pop, rock, and country influences inspire their songs’ cascading melodies, driving grooves and vivid lyrics. The band likes to sing about life and love in motion – sometimes soaring, sometimes stumbling, but always moving forward.

Dogstar announces new album, ‘Somewhere Between The Power Lines And Palm Trees ‘out October 6

Band to embark on 25 city headline tour this summer

Announced on July 19 in Los Angeles, California, LA-based, independent rock band Dogstar today announced they will release their first album in two decades, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, on October 6, 2023 via their own label Dillon Street Records (distributed through ADA). The band also has a newly signed management deal with Q Prime. The album’s first single “Everything Turns Around” is available now – listen here and pre-order the highly anticipated album here.

“We couldn’t think of a better song to re-introduce Dogstar than ‘Everything Turns Around’ and hope everyone loves it as much as we do. It’s catchy and poppy, has a chorus that rocks, a bridge with an indie sensibility and is completed with lyrics that tell an honest yet uplifting story,” Dogstar says of the track. “It’s one of our favorite songs to play live and we can’t wait to take it out on the road.”

In tandem with the announcement of Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, the band has debuted the music video for “Everything Turns Around.”

This summer, Dogstar will kick off a 25+-city headline Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees Tour. Beginning August 11 in Phoenix, AZ with a run of west coast dates across cities like Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Denver through the end of the month, they will then take their live show overseas for three dates in Japan in early September. They will resume their North American dates in December in cities like Chicago, Toronto, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, DC, and Atlanta before concluding on December 20 in Nashville, TN. Recently, Dogstar took over the Sunset Strip with an intimate, high-energy show at the iconic Roxy Theatre to usher in the release of the new single and album announcement. One of America’s most beloved independent bands, Turnpike Troubadours will release their highly anticipated new album, A Cat in the Rain, August 25 via Bossier City Records/Thirty Tigers (pre-order/pre-save here). Two-time Grammy winner, Zach Williams, to join TobyMac and MercyMe on fall tour

Adds new dates to A Hundred Highways tour

This fall, two-time GRAMMY Award winner, and multi-platinum-selling artist Zach Williams will embark on a historic tour with award-winning musicians TobyMac and MercyMe. Kicking off November 2nd in Charlotte, NC, the 12-date run will make stops in cities such as Atlanta, Tulsa, and Detroit before wrapping in Columbus, OH on November 19th. This tour marks the first time all three musicians have toured together. Tickets are now on sale here.

Format Festival returns to the heart of the Ozarks on September 22-24, 2023

Underground discos and stages tucked in the forest will accompany world-class installations and artist commissions. In addition, FORMAT will be a haven for exploration, including an expanded Bizarre Bazaar (curated food vendors, retail, experience booths and more), along with experimental soundscapes, light shows, therapeutic workshops, and uniquely integrated technology activations.

This year’s art program features free-standing and large-scale installations, artist-designed music venues, and a rotating video art program inside The Hangar. Highlights include:

  • Guerrilla Girls: I’m not a feminist but if I was — The anonymous female artist-activist group will present a new large-scale installation that includes their iconic, interactive wall work, which exposes gender and ethnic bias and corruption in art, film, politics, and pop culture. To accompany the work and their onsite participation, Guerrilla Girls will host additional activations at partner venues the Momentary and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art to spark conversation and raise awareness in the wider NW Arkansas region.
  • JR’s Inside Out Project — JR’s Inside Out Project, a global participatory art project which helps communities stand up for what they believe in and spark change, featuring black-and-white portraits of community members that will be plastered on the festival site.
  • Kameelah Janan Rasheed: Smokey’s — Kameelah Janan Rasheed is a learner invested in Black storytelling technologies that compel audiences to consider ways of [un]learning. Rasheed will present a new commission for FORMAT’s Smokey’s venue, transforming the main late night forest oasis with her powerful imagery and words.
  • ISTANBUL’74’s Flags for Future — Flags for Future is a sustainable art project featuring 30 limited-edition artist-designed flags created from upcycled plastic waste. Presented by ISTANBUL’74, a leading art platform known for organizing the IST International Arts and Culture Festival, and curating global exhibitions and public installations, this project supports earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria while raising awareness of plastic pollution. Participating artists include David Adjaye, Krista Kim, Robert Montgomery, and José Parlá. Flags for Future is realized in collaboration with Utopia.
  • serpentwithfeet: Heart of Brick – Brooklyn-based experimental musician Josiah Wise, known professionally as serpentwithfeet, conceived a live theatrical dance show choreographed by dancer Raja Feather Kelly and directed by filmmaker, artist, and performer Wu Tsang at the South of Oz stage on Sunday, September 24.
  • 180 Studios Presents Ragnar Kjartansson x The National and Jon Rafman — London’s creative epicenter 180 Studios presents two video works rotating daily inside The Hangar by Ragnar Kjartansson x The National and Jon Rafman. “A Lot of Sorrow” (2013-2014) is a video work of a live recording of a performance held at MoMA PS1 in 2013, in which Kjartansson invited The National to perform “Sorrow,” a nearly four-minute ballad on repeat for six hours straight, uninterrupted. Jon Rafman’s Minor Daemon: Volume 1 (2022) presents a computer-generated fever-dream universe, drawing on landscapes of online worlds to examine the relationship between technology and social consciousness.
  • The Modern Institute Presents Jeremy Deller — Jeremy Deller is a conceptual, video, and installation artist whose maverick approach as an “instigator of social interventions” utilizes historic events and archives as a resource, creating complex performative and participatory works. Presented in collaboration with Modern Institute, Everybody in the Place, An Incomplete History of Britain 1984-1992 (2018) explores the socio-political history and contemporary legacy of the ‘Second Summer of Love’ featuring rare and unseen footage. Also on view, Deller and Nick Abraham’s 2006 documentary, Our Hobby is Depeche Mode tells a story of resolute faith and devoted fandom; a bizarre, funny, sad, and often touching reflection on how people intimately embrace and appropriate pop culture in their own lives. These works will be on view in The Hangar.
  • Atelier Sisu: Evanescent — Award-winning Sydney-based Atelier Sisu is led by Peruvian sculptor and industrial designer Renzo B. Larriviere and architectural designer and artist Zara Pasfield. “Evanescent” is a larger-than-life bubble artwork standing at nearly 30 feet tall, inviting viewers to walk through the structures which are iridescent in the daylight and illuminated in darkness.
  • Danielle Hatch: Bar Installations & Live Performance — Local Arkansas artist Danielle Hatch will transform and dress FORMAT’s onsite bars using colorful textiles that reference domestic interiors. In collaboration with composer Amos Cochran, Hatch will present “ALL THE SOARINGS OF MY MIND BEGIN IN MY BLOOD,” a performance piece that ritualizes and reconnects audiences to the physical and psychological journeys of female ancestors.

Returning artists include Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe’s multi-room speakeasy venue, Next Door | Nova Heat; East African artist Uman’s scrim design for The Cube; Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari’s TOILETPAPER Magazine’s Drag Me to the Disco barn; the Bizarre Bazaar, a maze of curated retail, food, and beverage vendors; Marinella Senatore’s 700-foot-long light sculpture installation; and assume vivid astro focus’s interactive sculptures.

Visuals and branding for the 2023 edition of FORMAT are created by San Francisco-based artist and award-winning creative director, Simon Parmeggiani. Under the artist name Neptunian Glitter Ball, Parmeggiani brings to life his uncanny valley storytelling side, building a surreal AI world that seamlessly blends with everyday life, infusing it with fun and unpredictability. Through meticulous engineering and granular attributes, Parmeggiani has achieved an unparalleled level of control over AI-generated outputs, offering a glimpse of what things could look like, in a slightly shifted, glitchy dimension.

Joy Oladokun’s new album, Proof Of Life, out April 28

One of music’s most unique and vulnerable voices, Joy Oladokun will release her highly anticipated new album, Proof of Life, April 28 via Amigo Records/Verve Forecast/Republic Records (pre-order here). In advance of the release, new song “Changes,” a reflection on Oladokun’s own growth as well as the changing world around her, is debuting today. With production by Oladokun, Mike Elizondo, Ian Fitchuk, Dan Wilson and Alysa Vanderheym, Proof of Life captures the human experience with a profound simplicity. Across these thirteen tracks, Oladokun celebrates the little details and simple pleasures of being alive, while also giving voice to some of life’s most complex experiences in a way only she can.

In addition to “Changes,” the new record features previously released songs “Keeping The Light On” and the instant-classic duet, “Sweet Symphony” feat. Chris Stapleton, as well as collaborations with Manchester Orchestra, Mt. Joy, Maxo Kream and Noah Kahan. A special deluxe edition of the album will also be available on CD and vinyl April 28 featuring three additional tracks: “Purple Haze,” “Spotlight” and “Flowers.”

Known for her powerful live shows, Oladokun will perform a special headline show at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl on May 12, in addition to joining John Mayer and Noah Kahan on their respective tours this spring and summer. See below for complete itinerary.

Further adding to her breakout career, Oladokun’s song, “i see america,” was selected as a finalist for the Recording Academy’s new Special Merit Award, Best Song for Social Change, an accolade honoring music that addresses current social issues while inspiring positive global impact. Additionally, Oladokun is featured as part of GAP’s new campaign for their limited-edition line, GAP x The Brooklyn Circus, created in partnership with Brooklyn Circus founder and creative director, Ouigi Theodore, to celebrate the spirit of individuality and culture.

Proof of Life adds to a series of landmark years for Oladokun, a proud queer Black person and daughter of Nigerian immigrants. Her breakthrough major label debut, in defense of my own happiness, landed on numerous “Best of 2021” lists including at Billboard, Variety, American Songwriter, The Tennessean, Nashville Scene, The Bitter Southerner and NPR Music, who praised, “She has a remarkable ability to distill how forces at work in the world…she can make even social and political protest feel like an intimate, warmly human act.”

Moreover, Oladokun recently performed at the White House as part of the Respect for Marriage Act signing ceremony and has also performed on “CBS Saturday Morning,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “TODAY,” PBS’ “Austin City Limits and NPR Music’s “Tiny Desk (Home) Concert” series. Nell Mescal shares new single ‘Homesick’

One of Irelands’ most exciting rising talents, Nell Mescal kicks off her year with new single ‘Homesick’, released today via LAB Records. The single coincides with her second headline show in London tonight at The Grace, following the sold-out-in-a-day debut headliner she played in late summer 2022.

“Homesick,” once again produced by Steph Marziano, shifts the tempo from her critically acclaimed debut “Graduating,” showcasing another thrilling element to this young talent’s musical dexterity. Watch the video for “Homesick” below:

 

“I wrote Homesick on a trip to LA. It’s about when I first moved to London from Ireland and really missed home, but also being determined to stick it out so it doesn’t look like I failed at moving away” explains Nell.“The lyrics give a bit of insight to how hard it is to move away at a young age and the loneliness that comes with it, while the music is upbeat and hopeful to show that you can do hard things and that you can make a home wherever you go if you give it time.”

“Graduating”s release last summer catapulted Nell into a whirlwind six months. With only the one official release behind her, she assembled a tight-knit live band for her first Irish headline tour, a sell-out London debut, All Points East Festival, a winter tour supporting Phoebe Green, and she was chosen as one of the First Fifty for The Great Escape Festival.
