Accomplished singer and incredible dancer, Jaimie Steck, holds her audience and camera with her impeccable and masterful art through singing and dancing. She’s heralded as the “pop princess of the west coast,” and this multitalented Los Angeles resident has the perfect timing and knack for everything she does. She’s also an actress, seen in an episode of Anatomy of a Breakup, along with the films Swift Justice and Running Forever.
Her indelible talent is quite evident with her latest single “Boomerang,” and its music video. The video is directed by Zoltan Orban, featuring Steck’s masterful dancing, all the while letting her audience know she rules the screen while waving her baton around. She’s surrounded by a backdrop of fire and writer, with the heat from her performance causing intense electricity. Her performance demands her flame to continue burning with immense talent, taste, and style.
What do you attribute your incredible dancing skills to?
Jaimie Steck: I’ve been dancing since I could walk. I’ve always found that allowing myself to move instinctively has produced the best routines. I’d have to give most of the credit to my parents for getting me into dance lessons early and blessing me with some natural ability as well.
What is your process for writing and coordinating your dance routine to the lyrics and the music? Does the dancing come first or do the lyrics?
Jaimie: Most of the time, I find myself coordinating the routines to the music and how my body naturally responds to it. I’ll set up my camera and record myself improvising to specific sections of the song, over and over. Then I’ll rewatch each take and pick and choose which specific moves I like from each. I’ll then splice them all together and use it as a reference video when rehearsing the final routines.
You’re also an actress; what is it about getting into a different character that intrigues you the most?
Jaimie: Getting to play make-believe and really dive into the mindset of someone else is always fun for me. The study time of getting to know a character and discovering what drives them is always an intriguing experience. I can bring it over into my singing career as well, whether it’s an onstage performance or a music video, I get to be different versions of myself and play around with my creativity.
“Boomerang” is your latest single. Can you touch on its origins?
Jaimie: In life, there are certain people you can’t seem to stay away from. No matter how long you’ve been apart, or haven’t spoken to one another, you always seem to end up at the same places and make it back into each other’s webs. I had this situation happening in real-time when I co-wrote “Boomerang.” It really helped me express what I was feeling in that very moment of my life.
What was your experience like filming the music video”?
Jaimie: Fabulous. Exhilarating. HOT. (there was a giant fire behind me for half of it). This was the first video I’ve done where I was able to let the dancing truly guide the story. I’ve always wanted an intense “cane dance” and “chair dance”, and this time I got both! Little Easter egg; at the end of the video, the choreography is the same for the cane, chair, and fire portion and is perfectly edited together to make it one cohesive choreography. The most exhilarating part of filming was the fire. Being submerged in water, dancing my heart out, while I felt the heat from the flames on my back…words cannot explain the adrenaline rush.
What aspect draws you to dance most inherently?
Jaimie: The showmanship of it all. My favorite artists to watch are the ones that put on a well-rounded show, with singing and dancing at the heart of it. I’m a performer at heart, and when I perform I want to pull out all the stops to entertain those who enjoy my music and want to let loose and have fun in that moment.
