Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Steve Forbert has released his new single, a cover of Danny O’Keefe’s “Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues,” giving fans a preview of Steve’s upcoming album, Early Morning Rain, his first collection of cover songs since his Grammy-nominated release, Any Old Time, in 2002.
“I recorded this album to renew people’s appreciation for the fine craftsmanship these songs represent and as an acknowledgment of how much good ‘ol songs like these have meant to me,” explains Forbert. “This song was first a hit for Danny O’Keefe in 1972 and is has been on my list of favorites ever since. I’ve always liked it because it was well-written and rang true. Right now, however, the lonesome lyrics seem to sync right up with the self-quarantine, Coronavirus strangeness of daily life.” Fans can pre-order “Early Morning Rain” here.
Fans and critics alike hold Steve in high esteem, and he has released twenty albums in his career, beginning in 1978 with his debut album, Alive on Arrival,” including the Grammy-nominated tribute to Mississippi legend, Jimmy Rogers. Steve is also known for his 1979 hit, “Romeo’s Tune,” which reached #11 on Billboard charts. Steve’s songs have been covered by a variety of artists, including Keith Urban, Roseanne Cash, Marty Stuart and John Popper. He recently published his memoir Big City Cat: My Life in Folk-Rock in 2018, inducted into the Mississippi Musician’s Hall of Fame in 2016, and was the recipient of Mississippi’s Governor’s Arts Award earlier this year.
