Shovels & Rope, the acclaimed husband-and-wife duo from Charleston, SC, have released their sixth studio album, Something Is Working Up Above My Head. This new album, out on Dualtone Records, emphasizes rock and punk influences more than previous works. The duo describes the album as “a bit of a dark beast” but still approachable, reflecting their live sound. For this project, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent opted for a more minimalist recording approach, using only instrumentation they can perform live as a two-piece band. The album captures their signature energy and continues their powerful, intimate performances tradition.
“Greetings! Here is our newest record, Something Is Working Up Above My Head. It’s a bit of a dark beast, but we’d like to think that it comes with as many hearts as it does rows of teeth. It’s definitely approachable, but don’t put your hand in its mouth. We are grateful to everyone who has followed us through the years as well as anyone who may just now be discovering us. We intentionally made this record to replicate the way we sound live. Come see us and find out. Buy it, stream it, love it, leave it, let it scratch and sniff around. And if you like it, tell a friend. Love, MT & CA.”
