In 1971, Wanda Jackson sang, “I Already Know (What I’m Getting for My Birthday).” Turning 85, the lyrics might go as follows:
“I already know what I’m getting for my birthday
It’s something I’ve been wantin’ all year
I’m gonna get myself a very special present
I’m gonna get myself …
… two new formats of Every Night is Saturday Night: A Country Girl’s Journey to the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame!
To coincide with Wanda Jackson’s 85th birthday, a BMG Books paperback and a Penguin Random House
audiobook (narrated by iconic voice actress Grey DeLisle) debuted on October 20, 2022.
Known as the queen of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson combined grit with glamour to set a new template for
country music’s “girl singers” of the 1950s. With urging from Elvis Presley, she soon showed the world
that girls could rock, too, and landed more than 30 singles on the country and pop charts between 1954
and 1974. Jackson is a multiple Grammy nominee, a recipient of the Americana Music Association’s
Lifetime Achievement Award, and a 2009 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Wanda played with Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley in their heydays. Her
influential legacy is revered by contemporary artists like Elvis Costello (who wrote the book’s foreword),
Adele, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett and Jack White.
In Every Night is Saturday Night, Jackson says that throughout her childhood her mother made it a
priority that Wanda had a festive birthday party. She tells about other special birthdays, including her
21st, on which Wanda had her first drink (in Springfield, Missouri for the Ozark Jubilee, she ordered a
whiskey sour while out with friends and soon fell asleep in the booth where they were sitting) and her
65th, for which friends threw Wanda a spectacular party in a castle in Germany.
Now, her 85th is being celebrated with two new formats of her memoir so that Wanda Jackson’s
fascinating story as a pioneer for women in rock music can be further amplified.
