In early 2018, Sale had an LSD experience that completely changed his life. After taking a high dose, he stayed up all night writing and then decided to do some pushups before going to bed, around 8 AM. He got an adrenaline rush and “was thrown into a never-ending nightmare,” he says. “I spent months and months and months recovering from this moment, my nervous system was shocked and my emotional infrastructure was incredibly confused. I will never be the same.” That event inspired the album’s title, as well as the direction of many of the songs. “‘Wound Up (alt.)’ came very early in the process, maybe even before I knew I was making a record,” Sale explains. “This was pre-acid trip but was getting at some of the issues that arose from that experience…owning up to what I had become. It’s kind of a play on words about being ‘wound up’ as in stressed out, but also watching your dreams fade and coming to terms with how you actually ‘wound up.’”
Wild’s first release in 2014 began his devoted following, along with the reception of his 2016 EP, Steady Now. His single “Morning” received over 12 million Spotify streams and is featured on playlists including Roots Rising, Fresh Folk, among others. He’s also received critical praise from a variety of outlets, and songs from Steady Now reached the small and big screen with syncs in “Yellowstone,” “Brittany Runs a Marathon” and “Wind River.”
