Your new single “Strange Luv” delves into an alternative pop-soul sound. Where do you draw your inspiration?
Butta B-Rocka: I draw my inspiration from everywhere, all you have to do is open your eyes and observe what’s going on!
How did your collaboration with Atlanta rapper, Homer MC, come about?
Butta B-Rocka: I’m known Homer for over 11 years now; we’ve been writing together for years now. We were in the studio listening to tracks for my project with Belgium Producer- Lunaman- as soon as I heard the beat, I knew it was a banger-we instantly start vibing to the track, and the tracks, lyrics, and melody literally just forming based off where the music was moving us.
You’re a celebrated author, actress, and model. How do all of these talents combined contribute to your love of music?
Butta B-Rocka: Music is my number 1 love, since a kid. I’ve always been a creative person-I began writing songs and lyrics at the age of 11, and performing on stage at 13-so transitioning to writing a book was natural. In addition, performing and commanding a stage made it easy to move into acting. It’s kind of the same scenario with modeling-I’ve graced plenty of magazines as an artist, that eventually I start getting modeling gigs. It’s all been a blessing and all a part of the entertainment field.
The music video for “Strange Luv,” gives a nod to Alice In Wonderland – can you tell us a little about that?
Butta B-Rocka: I wanted to really show my creative side of this video, make it sort of a two-dimensional world, where she goes to sleep one way and wakes up in a whole other world. Hence Butta Butta Land! The song gives a dirty south ATL-type vibe whereas the video takes you on a journey.
How did you link up with director, Mazi O?
Butta B-Rocka: That was a true blessing as well. I really needed to connect with a director who could not only understand all the things I wanted to see in this video but could actually deliver my ideas and take it to another level. I was first introduced to Mazi O by his cousin Ishmael who also helped with directing and editing on the video. Mazi O shoots for major artists such as Cardi B and Akon. He shot the video “Wakanda” for Akon and once I saw his work which included some special effects- I was hooked. Our vibe on set was amazing. Every idea I gave him was incorporated.
You’ve performed all over the nation, is there one specific performance that stands out as especially memorable?
Butta B-Rocka: Dominican Republic stands out the most. It was about 4 years ago now. New Year’s Eve- I was the headliner at Lifestyles Resorts- and I performed to a crowd of 9k- You would have thought I was Beyonce, they had a mega stage, 3 LED screens a drone capturing my show and displaying it on the screens, flames, and lasers appearing on certain words within my show followed by a fireworks display. When you drove into the resort all 6 of the billboards had my picture and there were flyers and posters throughout the resort. So, I definitely felt Hollywood-ish- I was also able to bring my 11-piece band! It’s something I will never forget!
