Announced today in Los Angeles, California, musician SON OF A BISHOP debuted his new EP, Are We There (PRMD), featuring the lead track with music video, “Love Left Me Lonely.” Although known professionally as SON OF A BISHOP, his real name is Matthew Johnson, and was born and raised in a musical family in Atlanta, Georgia. Johnson has shared the stage with Grammy winners and multi-platinum artists, including Chance The Rapper, Sam Smith, Pharrell, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Demi Lovato, Keith Urban and Meghan Trainor, among numerous others.
Johnson has also performed on popular shows and morning segments like “The Grammy Awards,” “Good Morning America,” “The Emmy Awards,” “American Idol,” “X Factor” and “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” While having heard his voice without realizing it, his name will now be known to millions everywhere. Listen to his magnetic debut here, and the lead single and music video can be viewed below:
Johnson grew up singing in the church choir, in his father’s, a bishop, church. In a recent press release, he shares that this is what taught him to sing from the heart. While singing in the church, he was connected with one of Michael Jackson’s dancers and a production manager for Stevie Wonder, who were both fellow parishioners. Both of them have been pivotal in Johnson’s career, and are still his mentors, having booked him for gigs as a singer, actor and dancer.
When he turned eighteen, he landed a tour with Lauryn Hill, and he has been singing and touring since. Now, he’s shining in his own spotlight, and has been travelling around Europe, in Stockholm, where he has joined forces with Grammy-nominated writer, Ana Diaz (who has written for Zara Larsson & Britney Spears) and producer Oskar Sikow of Kate Boy, to create his new EP.
“It’s been a long time coming,” says the Son of A Bishop. “I’ve done my dues-paying, I’ve put in my 10,000 hours singing other people’s songs and loved every minute of it. I’ve also heard all about the miles-long distance from the back of the stage to the front, but trust me, I’m ready for the journey.”
