Toronto-based musician, Natalie Lynn, has released her new single “One,” which blends the genres of pop, indie and rock. Genre-blending is something Lynn enjoys doing since her inspirations come through her music with a variety of influences. Lynn has more new music on the way, with another single debuting this summer. We caught up with Lynn and spoke with her about “One,” her preference for playing guitar (and other instruments she plays and wants to play). Read on to discover more about this intriguing artist who blends nostalgia with modern acts.

Let’s talk about your recent single,”One.” What was the idea behind it, and what musical style had the most influence on you with it, since you blend nostalgic and modern styles?

“One” came from the idea of two people always wanting to be with each other but the timing never being there, but there’s one night that maybe it could happen. It’s really about taking chances and sort of living in the moment. I usually think of it as I was writing it to be more of an “in my head” conversation. I like that the song doesn’t resolve the story and it just keeps that feeling of excitement and build-up from start to end. I feel like it’s something a lot of people have experience with in their own relationships or lives. The mix of styles come from 80’s Stevie Nicks with a Carly Rae Jepsen meets the Killers vibe. It’s a rock song but in a pop package, and I love dipping my tunes back and forth between the two.

You play guitar; what kind of guitar do you prefer to play, and is there a certain style you’d like to own one day?

I play a Fender Telecaster, that’s my vibe these days. I also own a Gibson 339 that’s always fun to pull out once in a while. I feel like I could see myself going for a Strat someday or a nice Les Paul Studio in some sparkle finish.

Who are your greatest inspirations when it comes to playing guitar?

Sheryl Crow and Avril Lavigne were the first females to really turn me on to guitar as a teen and at that time there were a lot of influences coming from pop/punk music. Now a days and with this single, Bryan Adams, Haim and Muna hugely influenced me. I get hyped on a cool riff and a great tone more than a lot of things when I listen to music so I love drawing inspiration from all over the place!

Do you play any other instruments, or are there ones you’ve been wanting to learn how to play?

Piano was my first instrument – moved onto guitar and haven’t really looked back since. If I could learn how to play the fiddle that would be pretty cool. My grandfather was a very successful fiddle player in his day – won lots of awards in competitions! His trophy shelf is nuts. Would have been cool to share that with him.

Do you plan to release more singles throughout the year? What about a full-length album and/or EP?

I’m stoked to be working on new tunes right now, with a new single set for release this summer. Definitely keep your eyes peeled on the socials for news and info on what’s to come! Would love a full album or EP…(smiles)

Fun Questions

Who was your first concert, and do you have a favorite, thus far?

First concert – of which my parents took me to – was April Wine. I’m going to see the 1975 in a day and I’m pretty sure that’ll take the cake for me.

What was your first album on CD and/or vinyl?

CD – Britney Spears – Oops, I did it Again
Vinyl (this is hilarious but somehow…) – Britney Spears – Glory (laughs)

Which five albums and/or artists would you not want to live without?

The 1975 – I Love It When You Sleep…
Haim – Days Are Gone
The Killers – Hot Fuss
Lana Del Rey – Born To Die
Sheryl Crow

Which female and/or male musicians are on your bucket list to collaborate with?

Ryan Adams but turns out he’s a creep so not at all. But too bad, eh. Why can’t people not be that way!? Definitely Rihanna! 100% Max Martin and Jack Antonoff.

Do you have a guilty music and/or entertainment pleasure?

Oh god…I watch Pride And Prejudice way too much.
